On August 6, 2005, I made a short trip to Kawarayu and Kusatsu Onsen, two small and big hotsprings in Gunma Prefecture, which are 2 hours and a half away from Tokyo by express train.
Impressed by the essayist Kozaburo Arashiyama, I got to know Kawarayu Onsen which is destined to sink under the big dam to be constructed in 7 years. It was a very small, and frankly, lonely town, however, the natural scenary there is wonderful and I enjoyed walking in the forest and watching a fall and a deep valley. Thereafter, I visited Kusatsu, which is one of the largest hotsprings in Japan, and actually lots of sightseeners gathered there. I absolutely prefer smaller Kawarayu Onsen.
